OVERVIEW
Cryptocurrency and virtual asset trading have become increasingly prevalent in the UAE, particularly in jurisdictions like Dubai where innovation in digital finance is rapidly evolving. As more individuals and businesses engage in trading platforms and peer-to-peer transactions, many are unaware that such activities are strictly regulated by UAE law.
Under current legislation, anyone offering virtual asset services, including buying or selling crypto, must be licensed and registered with the competent regulatory authorities, such as the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) or the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA). Failure to comply with these requirements can result in criminal liability, even if the person involved is unaware that their actions constitute a regulated activity.
This mock trial is designed to explore these legal and regulatory complexities through a simulation of a real criminal case involving alleged unlicensed crypto trading. Participants will gain insight into the UAE criminal justice process, the role of regulatory compliance, and practical courtroom advocacy in financial crime cases.
